Neurodivergent-Affirming Therapy
The parameters around Neurodiversity are rapidly changing with improved, Neurodivergent-affirming studies becoming more available. While things are improving, a heavy legacy still exists, and powerful, often damaging narratives are still very much in the spotlight. As such, it is essential that therapists are properly informed by Neurodivergent voices and lived experience, as well as well-evidenced, peer-reviewed academic studies; this way, the client is not tasked with the extra labour of educating their healthcare provider.
Specific issues facing Neurodivergent people can include:
- Ableism
- Infantalisation
- Burnout
- Meltdowns, shut downs, and sensory overwhelm
- Executive dysfunction and struggling with task management
- Navigating late or incorrect diagnoses
- Managing conflict and interpersonal relationships
- Managing shame and feelings of judgement
All staff at Theia Therapy have received additional ND-affirming training, and are well-read on literature that centres Neurodivergent voices, as well as having lived experience with neurodiversity. The team at Theia Therapy are also all Neurodivergent, often with multi-diagnoses.
